How to Tell If Your Resume Is ATS-Compatible (and Test It)

Before you send another application, it's worth confirming an ATS can actually read your resume. Here are simple, free ways to test it — no paid "ATS scanner" required.

The 30-second copy-paste test

Open your resume, select all, and paste it into a plain text editor (Notepad, TextEdit). Then check:

• Is all the text there (nothing missing from headers/footers/text boxes)?
• Is it in the right order (titles with the right companies and dates)?
• Are bullet points intact, not turned into odd symbols?

If the plain-text version is clean and ordered, an ATS can likely parse it. If it's jumbled, your layout is the problem — usually columns or text boxes.

The LinkedIn / form autofill test

Upload your resume to a site that auto-fills fields from it (many job applications do this). If the parsed fields come back scrambled or empty, that's the same parsing the employer's ATS will do. Fix what came through wrong.

Warning signs you have a parsing problem

• Resume built in a design tool and exported as an image-like PDF.
• Key info (name, contact) only in the header/footer.

• Move contact details into the body.
• Re-run the copy-paste test to confirm.
