Resume Keywords - How to Use Job-Description Keywords the Right Way
Keywords are how recruiters find you inside an ATS — but "stuff your resume with keywords" is bad advice that backfires. Here's how to do it properly.
How recruiters actually search
When filling a role, a recruiter searches the ATS database for candidates using titles, skills, and tools — often combinations like "Software Engineer" AND React AND "Node.js". If those terms aren't on your resume in a readable form, you don't appear in the results, no matter how qualified you are.
How to find the right keywords
For each posting:
- Read the requirements and responsibilities.
- List the hard skills, tools, certifications, and the exact job title.
- Note terms that repeat — repetition signals importance.
- Capture both forms of acronyms: "Applicant Tracking System (ATS)".
These are your target keywords for that application.
How to include them naturally
- Put core skills in a dedicated Skills section for easy matching.
- Weave specifics into achievement bullets: "Built CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins, cutting deploy time 40%."
- Match the job title near the top when it's truthful.
The rules that keep it honest
- Only claim what's true. Keyword-matching gets you found; the interview exposes anything fake.
- No keyword stuffing. Hidden white text, keyword lists, or cramming irrelevant terms reads as spam to humans and adds nothing to ATS relevance.
- Mirror the posting's wording for skills you actually have, rather than inventing synonyms.
Why this pairs with formatting
Keywords only help if the ATS can read them — so combine this with a clean, parseable format. Together they're the core of an ATS-optimized resume.
