How to Write Resume Bullet Points That Pass ATS and Impress Humans
Your bullet points do double duty: they carry the keywords that make you findable in an ATS, and they're what a recruiter actually reads when deciding whom to call. Most bullets fail at both. Here's how to fix them.
The problem with typical bullets
Most resumes list duties, not results:
Responsible for managing social media accounts.
It's vague, has weak keywords, and proves nothing. A recruiter skims past it.
The formula
Action verb + what you did (with keywords) + measurable result.
Grew Instagram and LinkedIn following 32% in two quarters by launching a weekly content calendar.
That single line: starts with a strong verb, names the platforms (keywords), and quantifies impact.
Step by step
- Start with a strong verb — Built, Led, Cut, Launched, Automated, Negotiated. Avoid "Responsible for".
- Work in real keywords — the tools, skills, and terms from your target job descriptions, only where true.
- Quantify — %, $, time saved, volume, scale. No number? Use scope ("across 4 teams").
- Be specific — "reduced AWS costs 18%" beats "improved efficiency".
Quantifying when you don't have exact numbers
- Estimate ranges honestly ("~10 hours/week saved").
- Use counts ("onboarded 25+ clients").
- Use before/after ("cut report time from 3 days to 4 hours").
Keep it readable
- One line where possible; two max.
- Lead with the most impressive bullet in each role.
- 3–6 bullets per recent role; fewer for older ones.
Why this beats keyword stuffing
Cramming keywords into a list gets you found but loses the human on the shortlist. Results-driven bullets satisfy both — which is the whole point of an ATS-optimized resume. If your applications get found but never convert, weak bullets are a common culprit (see why no interview calls).
